Carre White has done it again! I fell in love with this lovely story of Cassie and Nathaniel. I love how Ms. White created Cassie as this stubborn mule-headed woman who won't really accept the fact that her parents really do have her best interest at heart. Yes, they appear nosy and meddling, but it's quite humorous really.
A shootout...a moment of weakness...and all of Cassie's plans to avoid Nathaniel have just gone down the drain. She's "compromised" and now it looks like marriage is best course of action. Of course, she's as mad as a hornet that the whole town thinks she's already engaged when she's never really given her consent! She wants to marry a real man: someone with manners, someone respectable, and someone who really would be a suitable husband. In her eyes, Nathaniel has all the manners of a drunk ox.
A book that is definitely worth the read. I'll be watching out for more of Ms. White's novels. If they continue to be this good, I should be downloading more of her works soon!

The hero was a drunk, gambling, degenerate. But according to everyone, from her own parents, his parents, and both sets of siblings, all he needed was the love of a good woman to mend his ways. Really! You are totally ok with your daughter marrying someone who can't take care of himself and is supposed to take care of her too?! And when she was eventually coming around to the idea of courting him, he ruins it by demanding she marry him right now! And when she refuses, calls her stubborn and pig-headed and then ruins her reputation. And the way he does it, her mother and sister find funny! At least her father redeems himself in my eyes in this section. When she does agree to marry him (WHY?!) he demands a wedding in two days. No explanation, but it must happen in two days. If Nathaniel had actually made an attempt to woo her, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Honestly, I feel Cassie should have gotten onto the first train out of there and taken it to as far as it would go.
This book was just ok for me. I would have given Nathanial a chance sooner than Cassie did. Cassie really tended to drive me crazy. There were some parts of the book that angered me and some parts that I questioned why they were necessary.
