The best of the series.
May 2017 - after rereading the whole series, I now think that King is the best of the series, followed by The Thief. But they're all obviously astounding and awesome.

I wasn't really as big a fan of this one compared to the other books in the series so far. A bit boring, mostly an okay read and just a few spots of great things in my opinion. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't like a book from mostly Sophos's point of view, I'd have thought I'd like the concept a lot more than I ended up doing.
I have access to the next book of the series, and I will read it, but if that one is the same reading experience as this book I might just be fine with not having access to the final book of the series.

"But does a good man let his circumstances determine his character?
I don't have the heart to give this less than four stars but I wasn't entirely amenable to an entire novel devoted to Sophos. Still, I did like that he went through a startling transformation.
Spoiler
That scene where he takes out both pistols at the end, shoots the traitor Baron, and tells them that they're going to vote again is something I never, ever expected Sophos would do. But Turner has you completely believing that in the space of three hundred pages he became that person, someone who can keep unruly barons in line and be a strong ruler who does ruthless things. Helped along by that scarred, scary new smile.jocelynsbookshelf's review against another edition
