Okay, I usually love Jane Austen, but she must have been GOING THROUGH IT when she wrote this one because it is soooo slow at the beginning & then kind of wrapped up in a rush? Also…how was marrying your first cousin considered okay? even in 1814? It’s also just lowkey grooming because he has known her since she was TEN YEARS OLD & he was 16. like, ew. Austen’s “heroine” is also shy and anxiety-ridden to a truly painful degree. I’m honestly baffled by this book. v disappointed tbh.

The main character comes from a lower-class background and after being sent to live with her rich aunt and uncle, is denigrated for her manners. As an adult, she in turn looks down on the manners of her parents when she returns home to visit them. One of the main characters owns a plantation in Antigua. It is implied that he is a slave owner. The slave trade is also briefly mentioned. One minor character is an alcoholic who curses mildly throughout his chapters and is said to make crude jokes at his daughter’s expense. The main character is romantically pursued by a man to whom she repeatedly tells that she’s not interested and is constantly pressured by her family to marry. Brief mention of the death of the main character’s sister, who was a child at the time.

Main character is a Cinderella-type figure who is mistreated throughout the book. Lots of conservative Christian morality throughout, but tempered slightly by your typical Austen satiric wit.

It's Austen; her most disagreeable is better than many peoples best. I have read this before and remembered it wasn't my favorite. This read really annoyed me! I've never liked Fanny as a "heroine", but I think I had more sympathy for her this time because the people in positions of power were so awful! Really, there's not one truly likeable character. But the writing is excellent. The ending is abrupt after that long, drawn out book though. I did enjoy this audiobook version!

The narration is great, and I really loved the emotion Frances Barber is able to depict in each of the charcoal, but ThisI have completed feelings about the story.
Overall, I did enjoy but the way everything turned out towards the end felt rushed and unsatisfying.
The moral commentary behind Austen's work felt slightly contradictory in Mansfield Park. Fanny relied a lot on her own prejudices in how she responded to the Crawford's and was very withdrawn and over cautious. These are both things that were seen as a character flaws in Lizzie and Darcy, but Fanny is praised for them because they show her 'consistancy' and 'moral conviction'. Fanny is sweet and definitely has a lot of inner strength, but aside from becoming slightly less shy, she doesn't really see much character development and the rest of her flaws tend to be explained away as somehow actually being a good thing in the end.

There was also so much build up of the 'potential for good' in the Crawford siblings, and their genuinely seemed to want to do better that their downfall felt like it came out of nowhere.
The romance with Fanny and Edmund was also unsatisfactory. Austen constantly stressed their platonic connection on Edmund's side, despite Fanny being in love throughout that a few sentences in the final chapter don't convince me that he was able to realise that he was really in love with her all along. We see so much of Fanny's feelings that maybe if we had seen what prompted Edmund to realise he was in love then I could believe it.
The only satisfying part of the ending was that Mrs Norris got sent away and is constantly unhappy.
