Similar to the first book, this was hard to get into. I barely remember who Kamet is, and why his presence matters. I appreciate Costis, though. Love that for him.

I miss Gen, most of all.
SpoilerThe miscarriage part though

"Even before I recognized him, I smiled politely. Well trained, I would have smiled so at my executioner."

Much like the case with A Conspiracy of Kings , I was not completely won over by a story not set primarily in Attolia. I wanted more of court intrigues and Gen and less of traveling through rocky expanses under cover. But, I think this type of long-range quest narrative is just lost on me in general, as I never do really appreciate it as the main plot of a novel. I tend to get as weary as the characters trampling through the wilderness. A shortcoming as a reader, I suppose.

My favorite character getting his own book and his own Immakuk and Ennikar storyline - YES! I loved this, definitely my fave so far. I love Gen (and Irene, separately) but with Gen comes Irene and their relationship still makes me so uncomfortable so it was nice to have it be on the peripheral of the peripheral and to just get to enjoy this world. Kamet was so much fun, watching him go from: 'well this Attolian is an idiot, I'll take him for all he's got' to 'oh no, he's just honest and kind, what do I dooo?' was honestly fantastic. Only one more left to go!

Turner keeps things fresh, with a new narrator (one that I almost forgot, from the previous books). The overarching plot also advances, as the nation-states of little peninsula try to find some way to stop the Mede invasion.
