A standard high fantasy story that quickly devolved (for me at least) into bodice-ripper; blecch.

As much as I enjoyed the first two books and the fondness I've developed for one particular character (the assassin), finishing this book for the time being has proved downright impossible.

SpoilerI know the romance of the book isn't everything but I despise it. This whole "and they were soul mates all along by the way!" shtick feels so lazy and thoughtless in the face of Rhapsody and Achmed's journey, for example, of actually becoming trusted allies and friends. It wasn't absolutely necessary for me that they end up together but we spent 2 books watching them have each other's back and then... surprise! Rhapsody is actually Emily from the first book's prologue, and she and Gwydion are long lost soul mates, fated to be love interests! I hate it. I think anything else should have happened. The love confessions and their "chemistry" mean absolutely nothing to me. And I am petty enough to stop reading because I am being forced to read a chapter in the stupid love interest's POV.

I was... disappointed with the end of this series, particularly with the climax at the end. Too many loose ends tied up in far too "neat" a way, and Rhapsody continued to the end as Queen of Everything and Absolutely Goddamned Perfect, which has nagged at me throughout the entirety of the series. Her flaws... were not flaws; I can only describe her as the perfect Mary Sue.

A solid conclusion to the original trilogy, things wrap up pretty well - although some of it dragged a bit, so it may have benefited from a bit more editing. Achmed & Grunthor are wonderful, Rhapsody's kind of blah, and full of stereotypes - yet I still love these books.

I was going to try to read the whole series but I'm going to pretend that this trilogy is all that Haydon wrote about these characters! From other reviews, it seems that the issues I had with this one (long, unnecessarily drawn out descriptions and poor pacing, characterization issues) only get worse as the series goes on. I'm happy to leave them where they are and remember them fondly.

I simply love books that I just can't stop reading and this series is one of them. Let for my review be the fact that after finishing it I'm suffering from withdrawal syndrome ;-)
