Had my attention from the start, and I liked the pacing of the storyline. I’m excited to read the next one

I like a good escapist fantasy book, don't get me wrong. This one was a little underwhelming against the hype I received for it. Good hook at the beginning, but it all fell a bit flat. Not so terrible that I won't finish the series, but wouldn't highly recommend.

Edit: I'm not going to finish the series. Honestly, the idea fills me with dread.

Good, but Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass series is better.

Reread (basically reading for the first time again) August 15th, 2021
I went into this remembering nothing and knowing that I'd never continued the series after reading the first book about six years ago, but wanting to try it again because my friend loves the series so much. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying the book and reading it in a day. I liked Feyre, and I really enjoyed watching her character develop. I was impressed by how natural it all felt. I'm excited to see how she continues to change after the events at the end of this book.
SpoilerShe did annoy me when she went out on the Fire Night after being told not to. It was stupid.

Lucien was amusing and I liked him most of the time. I liked Tamlin, although I wasn't completely head over heels for him. Rhysand has potential. (And I know things.) I was between hating and loving Nesta and Elain at different points in the book, but I ultimately liked both of them, even if I never warmed up to Feyre's dad.

The general plot was pretty good, and the world building was nicely woven in. I look forward to seeing more of the individual fae courts in later books. I liked the duality between the harshness and beauty in different places and characters throughout the book, and I found the writing (being from Sarah J. Maas, author of my favorite ToG series) to be very strong.

Overall, this was a good read that had me on the edge of my seat, with likable characters and an interesting world. 4 stars.

First ~40% of the book was a bit slow but then it picked up and I didn’t really put it down

Second attempt at reading this. I want to understand all the online jokes but I just don’t get the hype. Much preferred the throne of glass series which was my reintroduction into fantasy after a long break… which may have clouded my judgement on it. Not sure I’d love it so much on a reread.
