The book completely satisfied the purpose I purchased it for. Btw, it was in a nice second-hand bookshop in Rotterdam close to Markthal :)
The overall idea of the book is when the author, the British expat, travels to the most popular Dutch spots and events like Carnival, Christmas Eve etc. Some of the details of his travels seemed a bit extensive, but still adding to the bigger picture.
The chapters I fancied most of all were - #1 about windmills, climate change, and the battle against the tides, #2 about the carnivals, Catholics and the war against Spain, #3 the golden age about empire, slavery, and the rise of Amsterdam, #4 about WW2 and Nazi destruction of the Netherlands and #7 about sex, drugs and tradition of tolerance. Besides, there were also 2 more chapters about football and mosques, Islam and immigration that were harder to digest and kind of more controversial.
