Walter Diemar, an accountant at a candy factory, becomes distracted when a lab is moved next door to his office. While the company gave up on their attempt to invent bubble gum, Walter does not. Pop! tells how Walter came to invent bubble gum as we know it, as well as providing a quick glimpse back at historical "chews".

This is a fun look at the persistence scientists need to be to achieve success. It is perfect for young readers and for read alouds. The book includes added information after the story, with information on Walter, gum, and the source books used to write the story. Meghan McCarthy, a critically acclaimed author and illustrator, manages to convey the try and try again nature of scientific experiments while keeping the text level to primary grades.

The slightly bug eyed characters in the illustrations make the book feel like a story book and will entertain young readers. McCarthy uses a somewhat muted palate throughout the book—until the page when the gum hits the shelves in the candy store.

This book is recommended for all public libraries and any school library serving lower elementary.

This is a fun book for Kinder to second grade (though older kids will enjoy it as well)about how bubble gum was invented. Not chewing gum but bubble gum. Great book, easy to understand, and nice couple of pages on facts at the end. Good for a classroom library.

With bright, cartoony illustrations, Meghan McCarthy describes Walter Diemer's attempts (and final success) to invent bubble gum. A spread at the back of the book includes additional biographical information about Diemer and many fun facts about bubble gum. Sure to please kids and with enough information for an invention report, Pop! is a hit!

A great early nonfiction book for young readers. This was really interesting AND I learned that bubble gum was invented right here in PA!

I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book. I did find it to be slightly lacking as far as a story goes, but there was definitely lots of information about the invention of bubblegum.

I don't know if I just have an issue with nonfiction written for younger readers in general or if I just find this year's award-winning selections to be mostly subpar. I honestly thought this was just a story for most of it and remember feeling rather confused when I realized it was true. I'm also not much of a gum chewer and I don't really know how to blow bubbles, so perhaps that affected my judgment of the book as well.

This book had potential but fell flat. Despite an interesting topic, fun illustrations, and the inclusion of some facts about bubble gum that I didn't know before, the book was totally underwhelming. The style of writing felt really unpolished and the pace was slow. I'm sure there are better bubble gum books out there.
