If this was fantasy, it'd seem like "grimdark" would fit, but this is just bleak drama.

Dark themes, violence, rape, drugs. Hard to stomach.

I want to rate this so much higher but I got so lost in the last 150-200 pages and could not tell you what happened.

A decent enough story and very well written but ultimately not terribly unique story if I'm being honest. Especially disappointing was the character of Neda feels particuarly wasted and her narrative feels like it simply stops abruptly with no resolution or message. It's not a bad story by any means it just didn't feel massively new.

I was so shocked when I found out this book was written by a woman, the voice made me convinced it was a white man.

The story is boring, despite the violence. The characters are 2D, despite the extensive backstory. And the book itself required way more editing, the tense switches mid sentence and the prose are weak.

The only parts of the book that are vivid are the instances of extreme violence, all exclusively visited upon women and children.

Did not finish. I gave this book my best effort and got to page 400, but I was just not invested enough in the characters or their story to continue. The book was long and tedious, with a lot of extra details that often weren’t necessary. The only character I somewhat cared about was Ajay, but his portion of the story was entirely overshadowed by the subplot with Prem (which was honestly very hard to read). Maybe if I had more background knowledge of Indian culture, I may have found it more interesting, but in the end I just couldn’t get through it.

I had such high hopes for this one but am so disappointed. Overly long with thoroughly unlikeable characters. I enjoyed the beginning with Ajay’s story but it went downhill from there.  Dark and depressing.
