Hotel du Lac, 1984’s winner, is the story of an English romance novelist who flees to the safety of a small Swiss hotel, after a romantic scandal of her own. I enjoyed the atmospheric setting and the descriptions of both the hotel and the lake. Edith’s wry, witty, somewhat sardonic assessment of both herself and her fellow guests also appealed. I thought the conciseness of the ending was brilliant.Â
