I enjoy Dragons, but most Fantasy novels seem to play these as too generic and boring or too extremely different yet uninteresting or unbelievable - and though the dragon is NTO the center of the story, it is the companion of the main character and a fun insert to the novel and dialog - having the quirky asides with his dragon with their mental link allows for some information dump in small doses with humor thrown in to make you like that character more - quite honestly I don't think that I would have liked the character Vlad without the conversations with his dragon - the rest of the tale is straightforward with little surprises and a ton of flashbacks within the chapters, so be prepared to have to change gears rapidly and repeatedly for this jump after jump within the story - because of the amount of flashbacks I gave this story a four out of five stars.

I LOVED this one in the series. Which is funny, because it was a close one, as Teckla nearly drove me away. I will continue them, and enjoy the anti-hero that is Vlad.

I've been working my way through this series slowly -- too slowly, because it's so much fun. It's bizarre, weird, strange, sarcastic, beautifully imagined, creative as all hell, irreverent, thought-provoking...

I just have a good time with all of Brust's work. This wasn't an exception, and I'm glad.

The one where Vlad meets Morrolan, Sethra, and Aliera.

It's been several months since I read the first three in this series. So it's possibly I'm just forgetting things. But this world is really complicated. I can't keep the race and the...house?...clear in my head. Also, are all these people humanoid? I just found myself really confused with it. It didn't help that there are three basic stories being told simultaneously. Never mind that this book takes place before most (if not all, I can't remember) of the previous 3. There's the ritual at the beginning of every chapter...most of which I could care less about. Then we alternated the book's present and Vlad's past. The past filled in a few details, but a lot of it didn't seem to matter to the present, so it was weird why it was included. Still, even with all this, I definitely enjoyed the book. I'll be reading the next one once I get through the current stack of library books I've got.

Thankfully a much lighter book than [b:Teckla|133466|Teckla (Vlad Taltos, #3)|Steven Brust|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1357479420s/133466.jpg|803245] in both tone and subject matter. Taking us way back to the beginnings of Vlad's career, we get to see how he met almost all of the important people in his life, as well as how he picked up a number of his habits and prejudices. So far this has been my favorite of the series.
