4/5 Stars. A heart wrenching story told from the point of view of a middle schooler killed by the police while playing with a toy gun. Jerome, as a ghost, watches his family as well as the officer’s family as a ghost and watched what unfolds after his death. Jerome is guided through all of this by the ghost of Emmet Till, who guides all the ghosts of black boys who died at the hands of racism. The writing is powerful and punches readers right in the gut, as it should.
