I liked this book mainly for the insight it gave me into the choices Tillie Walden made for my favorite book of hers. It’s well done but I just don’t get into graphic memoir the way I do graphic novels. I have reviewed a few because I tend to prefer nonfiction, but when it comes to pictures I love a fantastical story where the art can shine.

"Spinning" is a graphic memoir that tells the story of Tillie Walden's coming of age, coming out, and figuring out her place in this world. This is all set to her twelve year long stint in figure skating, something that she did from a young age all the way through high school. Tillie traverses the highs and extreme lows of growing up different and the painful pressure of trying to be the best at what your Thing is. I thought the art style was beautiful, the storytelling was engaging, and I think anyone who grew up different can get something from this. That, in the end, is what I think this book is about. In the author's note, Walden basically says that its up to the reader what the book is actually about, and I choose that phrase: "growing up different." This book was beautiful. I'm sure that i will return to it when I need comfort.

This was rough but good. I liked the layering of stories because that’s how so much works in real life - layered stories forming the whole picture and truth.
