I loved it!! I think it balanced the dark aspects with hope and also a light tone in a really good way. It left a little bit to be desired, but i’m not sure what. I still really loved it

Good read! I enjoyed the fast paced nature of the book, it got to the point. Lots of sub adventures in this book, you never know what's going to happen in the next chapter! Beyond Harry's need to describe every woman in the story with excruciating detail, the main characters are loveable and fun to read about. This story ties two great book genres together in great harmony: mystery and fantasy!

Great book, excited to read more. The writing is a little bland at times but it's great when the characters voice shines through. Just a lovely modern (well, early 2000s) spin on noir detective and magic

This was a read that left me conflicted. On the one hand, 2000s fantasy writing scratches a nostalgia itch for me, and reading something from that time period gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling of reading books of that ilk as a middle-high schooler. The urban fantasy element is top-notch, and the author does a fantastic job at setting the scene and describing the main character's world.

On the other hand, whew is this book flawed in the way it describes female characters. Like, I get it, it's from 2000 and the author was probably getting a feel for the character, as well as the setting and writing in the mind of a neo-noir detective. But it doesn't make it any easier to digest. Every female character in this book is described as stunning, drop dead gorgeous, with the perkiest breasts and legs, save for maybe one, and even she is described as being 'like a cheerleader' in figure. I don't think I'd mind it as much if the main character described one female character like this, but it's with every single one, and frankly it gets exhausting.

Throughout this book, it reminded me of something very familiar, and by the end of it, I was able to pinpoint it: The CW'S Supernatural. Of course, Storm Front precedes this television series, but it feels similar in vein to it, from the urban fantasy aspect to most of the female characters being 2000s 'it-girl' hot chicks. Whether that is a plus or a minus depends on how you feel about Supernatural.

This is book has officially sold me on the Fantasy Genre. It is riveting from beginning to end. It doesn’t let up.
I only mark it down a star for being inappropriate at times and for a slightly lackluster ending. Still satisfying, just not at epic as i was hoping.

interesting and engaging, Butcher really commands the world he builds and the magic system makes sense and feels accessable as a reader. the solution to the crime was predictable and I spent the whole book waiting for the protagonist to catch up, but that's not really a fault of the book. I still can quite figure out if Harry was written to be a misogynistic asshole as a character flaw or if Harry's view of women was a product of the time it was written. curious to see how the series develops.
