This isn’t meant to be a feel-good book. You’ll have more questions coming out than going in. Dark, foreboding tragedy with elements of generational curses/trauma - a lot of film adaptations will interpret this as romantic when it’s not the main focus. Classic for a reason and I wish the author had not passed away so young.

(Spoiler) I have a lot to say, but generally speaking I loved this book and it's still on my mind, even though I finished it three weeks ago. Brontë writes about the impact of abuse, especially in Heathcliff's case, and how that has shaped him and his wish to destroy everything and everyone that made it possible in the first place. From Nelly to Hindley. And the way she writes is just insanely beautiful to me! Especially regarding emotion, I cried so many times (and the most actually after I finished the book). All these groundbreaking quotes of deep love touched me so much! And the fact that none of them are likeable, the way we're used to in other books, at least, but I still found myself empathising with both Heathcliff and Cathy. And Nelly (!!!). I was soooo sooooo angry with her at times, how she told Heathcliff he deserved the physical abuse and how she looked at and talked about some situations. Loved it so much. (/Spoiler)

I did not love it nor did I enjoy my reading experience with this, but I cannot say that it is a bad book. I despised most of the characters (which I guess we're supposed to). At times it felt confusing

(I still don't understand why most of them died

and I had to use a family tree to keep track of the relationships between the characters. On the good side it is very well written and atmospheric. It was probably a good book, just not for me.
