Pennac does a fabulous job of explaining the various reasons that some people (particulary teens) do not enjoy reading. It seems that one way that parents and educators kill off the joy of reading is by making the purpose of reading to always be getting the "right answer." He argues for once again allowing reading to be about pleasure as it was early on when they first had that excitement about learning to read and when people read aloud to them. This is a great inspiration for teachers, parents, and librarians among others.

Daniel Pennac (as translated from French by...someone, already forgot who, but she did a fine job) writes non-fiction exactly as it should be written: sensible, succinct, and funny. In "The Rights of the Reader" he takes on some difficult questions: why it is that so many youth "hate to read." Is it the way schools teach? Is it the distractions teens face? Why is reading so important? Are there rules to follow? Pennac has certainly given me, a teen librarian, much to mull over, and this book deserves several re-reads.

*BIG BONUS- Quentin Blake, a huge favorite of mine, does lovely illustrations.

실은 엄마는 read out loud하는 타입이 아니고 오히려 빨리 본인 책을 읽고 싶어서 한글을 가르치고 영어나 일어 등을 제가 배우기 시작할 때도 자꾸 단어 물어보는 게 귀찮아서 제게 사전을 집어던지고 'leave me alone!'하는 타입의 방임형 엄마였죠..^^;;;

'그리고 사전을 봐도 모르겠으면 그냥 넘어가봐~ 나중에 이해가 갈지도 몰라~ 정 모르겠으면 읽지마, 너한테 아직 넘 어려운가보지~'하면서 스스로 skip하고 스스로 배우게 하는 타입..-_-;;;(음.. 지금 생각해보니 참 교육자로서는 그닥 소질이 없었군요.. 엄마도 그걸 알아차리고 교대 다니다가 영문과로 전공을 바꿨다고;;)

게다가 어릴적부터 censorship은 커녕 본인이 괜찮다고 생각한 책이나 영화는 rated R이어도 소개해주는 엄마여서..-_-;; 음.. 솔직히 제게는 '어린이 권장도서 목록' '청소년 권장도서 목록'이란 것은 없었고 그냥 '재미있는 책들'로만 인식되었던 것 같아요..;;

마치 공기처럼 제 주위를 감싸던 책들을 피할래야 피할 수가 없었어요;;

Reading is free..

This is hands down, my new favorite book, which is saying something because I haven't had a new favorite book since 1996 when I first read The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara.

This book is a delightful, whimsical treatise on the love of reading. I read entire chapters aloud to my husband because I could not contain my enthusiasm for this book.

Among the highlights of the book are the following passages:

What we need to understand is that books weren't written so that young people could write essays about them, but so that they could read them if they really wanted to.

The road to knowledge doesn't lead into this classroom: it leads out of it.

If you're wondering how you'll find time, it means you don't really want to read. Because nobody's ever got time. Children certainly haven't, nor teenagers or grown-ups. Life always gets in the way.

I could go on and on, but I'm pretty sure I'm preaching to the choir, and besides this book is far better written than my review.

I do have two things to note: this book is written by a teacher, and so the slant is towards why students don't seem to enjoy reading, and what can be done about it. It actually reads very easily, and the logic is straightforward, but it's helpful to know that this is the basic argument behind the book.

The second thing to note is that the chapter on the right to mistake a book for real life isn't about what I thought it'd be about. It's more about how adolescents relate to characters, seeing themselves in them, seeing their lives mirrored in the characters' dramas.

I don't know if I saw myself in any of my favorite characters as a teenager, but I do lose myself in books, which is what I think of when I think of mistaking a book for real life. I feel the heartaches and joys of the characters I'm reading about. I get frustrated when characters make bad decisions. (I also get frustrated with authors for bad writing.) And I love, love, love, when I find a character I want to know in real life. Even though I know they're a product of someone's imagination.

It seems that a book about the love of reading is a little redundant. Clearly people who love reading are already reading, but I think this book is well worth the few short hours it will take you to read it.

Though the book is titled "Rights of the Reader" he spends the first three-quarters of the book discussing how (and how not) to develop a love of reading in children so they become lifelong readers.

But, there is a method to what he is doing. He builds the story by discussing childhood reading as it progresses through the life of a child, and ends with what every reader should have the right to do, including the right to not read at all.

Though it might perhaps be mis-titled, it was an interesting exploration of what we do wrong when we try to instill a love of reading in children, and offers examples of what we can do right. And it is all done with a singular style and point of view.
