The only reason I'm rating this one so high is because of a few characters, but mostly Tammy

A solid literary suspense. I could see the end about 40% in, but I doubt all readers will. The clues are subtle, though the plot is somewhat formulaic. Still, I thought the book a telling commentary on the zeitgeist.

One Night Gone is told through dual timelines. We get Maureen, a girl who went missing in the mid-80s and Allison some thirty years later trying to figure out what happened. There is a decent mystery here, but it's completely predictable, and if I was supposed to get some thriller-like vibes, I missed them. I just didn't feel that tension that should come with a thriller. What it all really boils down to is the haves and the have nots and those who dare to cross that line between them. For a storyline that has been done so many times in various forms, I would've really liked a little less predictability to make it stand out. In the end, this one was just an okay read for me.

A problem with not journaling when I finish a book and waiting several weeks to do is that I've read several books since and may not recall details of the story. However, I do remember that this one kept me going.

I really enjoyed this book which tells the story of two women trying to make a new start in the oceanside town of Opal Beach. Maureen is a young carnival worker hoping to better her life, but suddenly disappears from the town. Thirty years later, Allison, a meteorologist trying to move forward after being fired for an on-the-job meltdown, has the chance to spend a summer in Opal Beach. The story is told through alternating timelines and from the points-of-view of both Maureen and Allison.

Allison is drawn into the mystery of what happened to Maureen by someone who was a friend of Maureen's when they were both teenagers. Allison relates to Maureen more than she will admit and persists in asking questions around town, even when the investigation puts her at risk. I didn't like all of the directions the story takes before everything wraps up, but I was surprised by the ending. Some clues are there, but but some of the events still seem unlikely. However, I appreciate that the actions of many of the characters support the theme that vulnerable, desperate women can feel forced into making unwise and dangerous decisions. Overall, this is an entertaining and suspenseful read.

Small towns that swell in the summer have their own peculiar social strata and ethos. The locals tend to stratify between those who work in the shops over the summer and do the general work of the town and those who own those shops and lord it over the town, while the Summer People are both needed and despised by the locals. Add to that a missing "local" (a runaway from home who becomes one of the locals) who was never found and a Summer Person (over the start of winter) who could help solve that mystery, and you've got a decent mystery. Even better? A twist I nearly missed and didn't only because I've read so many of these books, especially this summer.

Well this was a fun read! I have to say that the cover love for One Night Gone grabbed me right away. I was so fascinated with the dual timeline and the need to find out what happened to this mysterious girl years ago.

Some fun little twists in there too!
