Such an interesting story, it’s actually impressive the book fell as flat as it did.

A little girl is left floating in the Atlantic Ocean after the boat she was on sinks under suspicious circumstances. Only her and the captain survive. Found miles and days apart. Their stories contradict. Why? How? Should we trust the World War II fighter pilot-hero captain, or the sweet, innocent, apple cheeked girl from Wisconsin? Is it murder? Negligence?

Somehow, the story gets bogged down with unnecessary dialogue and a lack of storytelling. The compelling bits of survival and interpersonal intrigue were clinically presented. I enjoy sailing and grew up around boats, and even I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the sailing bits. A good ghost writer and this would have been a great book.

Listened to this on audio. What a fascinating story! How come I had never heard about this? This happened just a bit before I was born, but you'd think I would have heard of it at some point. Anyway, incredible how people can deceive.

I agree with a previous reviewer that said “this is a 5 star story in a 2 star book”.

I had originally heard about this event on a podcast and was hoping the book would provide more detail.  I (surprisingly?) think I learned more from the one hour long podcast than I did from this book. The writing is juvenile and doesn’t hold the weight this story deserves.

I recently found out that Tere told her story on an episode of I Survived.  I’ll be heading there next to get her first hand perspective.

This was a great story…but not long enough for a book, so they put extra chapters telling everyone’s full life histories that I definitely didn’t care about. I finally just skipped those.

Review:
Alone: Orphaned On The Ocean

Tere Duperrault Fassenbender

Very rarely to I read non fiction, so how did I end up with this. Facebook. Some YouTuber was telling the story about a gurl found at sea after being told by the “lone survivor” that she had died.

That sucked me in fully. And while the events are remarkable the book was dreadful. I mean yes the events are dreadful that took place, but the narration and dictation was welcome to napville.

It is a fascinating story. But it could have been an essay or article or podcast episode.
