A fun Catwoman one-shot that includes Selina's backstory, a new and interesting villain, and a sympathetic and sweet Batman. A quick read, much fun, well-paced and plotted. I want more!

I really liked the One Bad Day: Riddler book and then saw on Goodreads that they've done a whole miniseries of them, based on the Joker's line from [b:Batman: The Killing Joke|96358|Batman The Killing Joke|Alan Moore|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1346331835l/96358._SX50_.jpg|551787] that all it takes is "one bad day" to drive a "normal person" to insanity/villainy. (I could've sworn it was also the name of an issue, but it's been years since I've read that, so I could be misremembering.) Because DC wisely chose a selection of my favorite contemporary comics writers to helm these stories focusing on different characters from Batman's "gallery of rogues" (Why don't we use the word "gallery" in reference to anyone else's enemies in comics?), I've checked them all out. This was a very solid Catwoman story by a creative team I love. By the end, though, it only built up my eagerness for more of a story that may or may not ever come.

I miss the era of one-shots: there is something so satisfying about reading a well-constructed story executed in a single issue. Batman: One Bad DayCatwoman (2023) is a solid example of this genre: a tightly constructed narrative about a day in the life of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. When Selina was a child, her mom pawned a mid-century French broach for $200 in desperation. Now it's being sold at auction starting at $30,000. Selina plans a heist to steal back what's rightfully hers, but things go sideways unexpectedly, causing Selina to rethink her childhood and potentially make a new friend—or enemy.

G. Willow Wilson is a master of dialogue and characterization. To delve into something new in this well-established character is no small feat. The best Selina stories show us both her toughness and vulnerability, her anti-capitalist principles and her personal hurts. Batman: One Bad Day Catwoman gives us all of facets while still presenting the character as a unified person. Jamie McKelvie and Clayton Cowles emphasize Selina's duality as well by separating the dialogue of Selina and the other characters—presented in traditional white and black speech balloons—from Selina's internal monologue—presented in the inverse coloring. It's truly a solid one-shot, making me want to read the others in the limited series.

Probably the weakest of the series so far. Still good but not exactly what I expected and I don't think it counts as one bad day for Catwoman.
