Lovers of Joseph Delaney's Spooks series will love this book! A great read for someone who wants a little adventure and mystery surrounding an ancient tale.

2015 review:

This book was very, very strange, and I couldn't connect to any of the characters or the story. That being said, the rating I'm tempted to give this book is probably too harsh. I'm just not gonna give it any stars right now, and think about it for a while.

I have had this book on my shelves for years, so if anything it's a good thing that I finally got around to reading it.

I think that I should have liked this one a lot more than I did. I blame my somewhat distracted reading environment - I think this book requires quiet. I did like the way that Christianity and pegan ideas were blended to create a cohesive whole.

Although this wasn't the most amazing book I've ever read, I really liked it! The main character, Will, is a fourteen-year-old boy who's already got a sad past, but in spite of his predicament he just gets on with life and you can't help but like him for that. I loved the fact that it was set in the 14th century, because I haven't read any books set in that time period. The author had obviously done her research, so it the details of the time period really brought it to life! I loved the supporting characters too, especially Brother Walter and Brother Snail, and even Shadlock grew on me. The climax was a little bit disappointing, but the build up to it was good and the multiple twists in the plot at the end of the book really sold it for me! I will definitely get the sequel from the library. After the last plot twist, I think Will's life at the abbey is going to get very interesting...
