Timeless tale about passion, creativity, determination, struggle, sacrifice, and devotion.

I'll be referencing this book and suggesting it in every single dance history and appreciation class I teach. It's a visual feast and textual tome of history and fantasy.

Très bien je ne connaissais pas Josephine Baker. Quelle liberté sexuelle il y avait pendant la première moitié du 20e siècle, vache ! J'ai l'impression qu'on vit au siècle des puritains maintenant. J'ai découvert qu'une chanson de 1916 s'appelle If You Were the Only Girl (In the World), d’où la chanson de Rihanna Only girl (in the world).

« Ils m'ont dit que tu étais communiste. J'ai éclaté de rire : COMMUNISTE ? Je leur ai répondu : MAIS ELLE VIT DANS UN CHÂTEAU ! Ha ! Ha ! » [pendant la guerre froide]

A really great graphic novel biography. I enjoyed the different stylistic approach and felt like I learned a lot about such an iconic woman!

Amazing biography. Great drawings. It definitely seemed to jump from one historical moment to the next a bit abruptly which was surprising for an over 500 page graphic novel, but honestly Baker's life was so full that it's hard to imagine what it would have looked like if everything had been included.

uhhh not great. kinda disappointing. i didn’t enjoy the writing. it somehow seemed simultaneously too ambitious & not ambitious enough of a project. it was confusing how quickly the story jumped around. i feel like i could’ve learned the same amount (or more!) about josephine baker from just reading her wiki page. & as for the illustrations…at the very least the artist’s style didn’t work well. although it actually read more like she couldn’t figure out how to make her style work for illustrating black people…in a book about a black woman…so. overall, not awesome.
