tldr - I love this book and everything in it, and also Samantha Shannon
If I could choose anyone on Earth, it would still be you, Paige Mahoney.
If I could choose anyone on Earth, it would still be you, Paige Mahoney.
This is my 4th full length novel from Samantha Shannon (and my 100th logged on here!) and I think I can safely say that she is one of, if not my favourite authors of all time. The scrimmage chapter made me feel the most adrenaline reading I’ve felt since the hunger games. The twist at the end was magnificent.
The Mime Order escapes the trap of being the slightly dull filler book in the middle of the start and end of the overall story (although it is clear that this is the segue between larger events) and manages to keep The Bone Season’s themes and characters feeling fresh. Paige is noticeably changed by the things that happen to her, yet she doesn’t go down the typical fantasy protagonist route of becoming ruthless and unforgiving, she laughs and spends time with her friends, and fucks up, and has worries and issues outside of the main plot and “omg my love interest might not like me!!” I honestly could write forever about how much I love Paige Mahoney, Samantha Shannon, and this series in general, but you all should just read it instead :)
this was honestly one of the most frustrating reading experiences ever.
first of all. a lot of my anger comes from the fact that paige is NINETEEN YEARS OF AGE. she should have been older! like 25 or something. like i just cant believe that she’s this very feared + respected mollisher with only 3 years of experience under her belt and still a TEEN. not to say you cant be good at your job at 19. but come on. it made me laugh every time i remembered she’s doing all of these things at only 19. idk. maybe it’s not her age and more that the author hasnt done a good job at convincing me that paige is so capable that she can lead the syndicate.
also…not going to spend much time on how warden is an immortal being and paige is only 19! but it is weird. and personally i dont see the chemistry.
i feel like this book could have been an email. like it was just paige constantly getting beaten up, going to places she shouldnt to, and repeat like 3 times. this could have been shorter. like nothing really exciting until the scrimmage.
also i think it’s silly that paige didnt kill jaxon. like i get he had to stay alive for Plot but like come on paige get it together. idk maybe im still in the jade city mindset where they actually kill their enemies but lol. like was she actually surprised at the end it was so obvious.
also…okay there was this lart where paige was talking to nick and she mentioned someone named lina. i was like should i know who that is? looked up the name in the book, nothing came up. then i remebered that’s nick’s sister that was mentioned im the first book. like samanthan shannon please be serious. why wouldnt you remind people who that is? especially, bc it ONLY got mentioned in the first book. like it was such a minor thing but it made me so mad. i think the author’s writing is just not for me. i don’t like how she explains things and feel like her world building had a bunch of holes.
also like rephaite origin story was so boring like THEY are so boring. dont get me started on their MCU entrance when paige won the scrimmage it was so ridiculous.
the penny dreadful thing…one of the most annoying parts of the book. yes i believe in the power of propaganda and the written word but no way people accepted rephaites JUST bc of that…like idk maybe having some reph sightings scattered through the l book would have made sense. like this is banking on everyone having read the penny dreadful. what if you didnt read it and they showed up i feel like you’d be like wtf???
i really didnt enjoy this book. but i do want to know what happens next but i dont think i have it in me to read FIVE other books for this series. maybe if it was just a trilogy i would finish but i dont think i can sit through another paige and warden scene like i hate them.
