Fascinating that most of the Grimm Brothers tales have stepmothers are evil. I also think this tale shows how much children pay attention to details even when parents think they’re not.

Browne's illustrations genuinely do what illustrations are supposed to and add to the story. (Is it a coincidence that the witch and the stepmother have matching moles? I think not.)
Fantastic version.

Gorgeous illustrations! One of the Grimms' scariest tales.

This fairy tale is tragic!
First, the parents can't afford to feed their children so they begin to leave them out in the woods until they cannot find their way back. THEN they get caught by an evil witch who makes a house out of bread so she can trap, fatten up, and feed on little children. When they finally rid of the witch and steal her jewelry, they found their way back by crossing a stream on the back of a duck. But at least they are all happy in the end.
