It was great to be back with Sabina and her pals in this, the fourth instalment of the Sabina Kane series. I very much enjoyed the first three books and was desperately wishing good things on Sabina and Adam in the previous book so that they might finally get it together. ('cause, you know, if you wish for something hard enough, it will happen). And how good was the end of Green-eyed Demon? So good, is the answer to that. Sabina finally stopped being a Fraidy Cat and admitted she loved Adam after nearly losing him to mad Maisie, and we all breathed a sigh of contented relief.

It was a slight disappointment then, after all the high emotion and drama from the end of that book, to discover that three months later at the beginning of this one, they have morphed into the world's dullest couple. Adam is being Mr. Judgy Von Holier Than Thou about Sabina's vamp side. And their shows of affection are mostly limited to unromantic pecks on the cheek and an occasional arm draped around a shoulder. I realise once the main couple get together the sexual tension part will be missing as we move towards more comfortable togetherness, but surely there should still be sexual attraction? I would have liked to think that after only a matter of weeks they still find each other more appealing than this.

And it wasn't until much further into the book that I began to understand the possible reason for Wells writing them this way, and by the midway point, the drama stakes for these two have been upped almost beyond bearing for both of them. And all was forgiven. I still love Adam and Sabina as a couple despite their problems and now having finished the novel I am back to being optimistic for them at the very least. Who ever said love was easy, eh?

The mystery plot was also a little slow to get going. I have to say if this book was a football match, all the goals were scored in the second half and I did have a moment in the middle wondering what had happened to these characters that used to be such fun. Even the ever glamorous Pussy Willow has turned from a fun-loving cross dressing fae with a heart of gold, to a drag queen bitch diva from hell. Her and Gighul are having some kind of "issues". I'm not at all sure what's going on there but I hope we get the old PW back soon.

All in all, not the finest of the series so far, but a must read in terms of plot development. This is one of those occasions where I wish for half stars because I would give it 3.5, but since the end was so good I'll round up to 4.

4 Stars! ★★★★

Tsk tsk my dear Sabina Kane, what the hell happened to you??

I was excited about this one. Nah, ok, you’re right. I wasn’t THAT excited. Just a little bit. However, I wanted a nice story especially since the previous book was pretty awesome. But this?? 40% boredom, 60% bullsh*t. I ended up skimming most of it.

Yes, this means that the next one won’t even be on my “to-read” shelf.

No, I won’t change my mind.

Yes, owls are extremely cute.

Yes, I do have a picture of an owl wearing a top hat and a monocle.

No, I won’t share it with you.

Ok, stop whining, I’ll share it with you.

I liked this one, but not as much as the others in this series. It seemed really slow about halfway through the book, but the last several chapters were really good.

I gave it 3.5 stars

A big part of the book addresses Sabina and Maisie's relationship and Maisie's issues now that she has been rescued from their maternal grandmother. Everyone is back in New York dealing with the Peace negotiations when people come up murdered in the dark races community.

I found that SILVER-TONGUED DEVIL was a lot slower then the previous books but still well paced and there was not a lot of action. There is drama between everyone throughout the book, no one is left unaffected in some way. Sabina and Adam are doing fantastic for most of the book until something that happened in a previous book comes out, I will refrain from telling you how that all turns out so not to spoil your suspense. There is some major loss which was beyond shocking and I found myself bawling my eyes out. Because of the loss some other things seem to be happening with Sabina and I cant wait to find out what they mean. Sabina has changed SO much from book 1 and it has been a great journey as she grows. There is some great lead-up to book 5 and we are not left with a ridiculous cliffhanger which is nice. I have really enjoyed Sabina's journey and I'm sad that BLUE-BLOODED VAMP will be the last book of the series but also excited to see how it ends.

It's awkward to review Silver Tongued Devil, the fourth book in the series without at least briefly referencing the events in the previous titles so if you haven't yet read them, and plan to, you might want to avoid this review...

With her grandmother dead, Cain thwarted, Maisie rescued and Sabina settling into the New York mage community with Adam you could be forgiven for expecting that this fourth installment would be lacking the action and urgency of the first three books. In some ways that is accurate, Silver Tongued Devil is more about internal conflict than raging battles. Sabina is struggling to reconcile her vampire and mage halves, and is uneasy about suppressing her natural instincts. She hopes the opportunity to investigate the brutal murders happening in the city, will satisfy her but instead she is distracted at having to work with both Slade and Adam, worried that Adam will figure out exactly what happened in New Orleans. With the added concern of the approaching Treaty signing, Sabina doesn't realise how badly her twin is suffering after the events in The Green-Eyed Demon and seems unable to reach out to her friends. With all this emotional angst, I didn't enjoy this installment quite as much as the first three. It's not only Sabina and Adam not getting along, Giguhl is feeling ignored and despite filling his time with roller derby and a budding relationship with a transgender fairy, his spark seems to be missing. Georgia and Mac's also make an appearance but their relationship is dissolving under the pressure of werewolf law so it's heartbreak all round. It is good to see emotional growth from the characters but I didn't think it was balanced well within the plot. It's not until about three quarters into the story that the action begins, though it has quite a kick. In a shocking finale, Sabina discovers she isn't as nearly as free from her past as she hoped and risks losing everything.

Silver-Tongued Devil is not the best example of this series but skipping over it would definitely leave a hole in the storyline, this isn't a series that can be picked up out of order. The conclusion certainly saved the book for me and left me eager to read the next, Blue-Blooded Vamp, due in June 2012, which will conclude the series.

This one was just OK for me. I felt like it descended into predictability and cliches, which the series had been teetering on the brink of doing from the start. There was just a lack of originality in this installment. It wasn't awful, because Wells has built up a good web now, and it was interesting to see how that progressed, but I just felt like all the drama was scripted. Hopefully the fifth will break from this and offer something new.
