This was a great read. Retired cop turned Alpha vigilante Evan paired up with headstrong public defender Lucy. Evan was sick of bad guys getting away with their crimes and teamed up with his childhood friends to form the Sentinels of Babylon (SOBs). Their Mission: rid the town of every rapist, pedophile and killer. Their newest assignment: take out a murderer, who happened to be Lucy's brother. Unfortunately, Lucy gets in their way because she believes in her brother's innocence.

There's murder and mayhem. Hot and sexy scenes. And a love that blossoms amidst the darkness. I recommend it to lovers of romantic suspense.

When Evil came back into Lucy’s life, he’s not letting her go this time & will show Lucy the only place she belongs is in his arms. Lucy always fights for the underdog being a defense attorney & knows better than to get involved with S.O.B. MC President Evil, but he is the only man she trusts to share her secrets with. Evil walks a narrow path with his fellow one percenters to help make justice happen, but the danger is moving ever closer to their club and as his MC takes the heat, Lucy gets caught in the crossfire. Evil will do whatever it takes to keep Lucy safe and when he finds out just how close to home the danger is, he will take out the enemy even though he knows Lucy may not be able to forgive him. With his & Lucy’s relationship on the line, Evil will have to a make a decision about his role with the club if he wants to make a future with Lucy.

This is my first novel by this author and Necessary Evil is a great start for what promises to be a fabulous series.

Even Villiers is ex-cop who runs a bar after taking early retirement on a full pension. He is a member of The sentinels Of Babylon MC but that's a convenient cover for their rumoured vigilante activities. Their methods for seeking justice on behalf of victims are questionable however their targets 'leads' are only passed to them when traditional justice hasn't worked.

Defence Attorney Lucy Simmons is passionate about her work believing everyone is entitled to a fair trial but is disillusioned when guilty suspects walk free because of incompetent police work. She's heard that former cop Evil and is associates take the law into their own hands but that not enough to say away from the dangerous man.

I love Evil and Lucy together as they finally come together after skirting around each other for a couple of years. I like the twist in this novel because it throws the protagonists into an unprecedented situation, making Evil question what he does apart from tend a bar. There is an interesting batch of secondary characters which I'm presuming will form the basis for the remainder of the series.

To sum up, this is fast-paced romance, which a little different from other MC books I have read but that makes it even more appealing. The author is new to me and I looking forward reading more of her contemporary romance novels

A great start to a series! This is my time reading Jamie K. Schmidt and I have to say I really enjoyed Necessary Evil. It was a griping read, well written and kept me interested throughout the book. Although I would not call it an MC romance is was still a good book.. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the ending was too rushed, there was not real resolution over the fact he was a mercenary, it was just almost skipped over.

Ok, normally I don’t complain about covers or blurbs that describe the book. I actually make it a point not to because there is a reason why the author chose the cover or the publisher wrote the blurb the way they did. But this time, I have to say something.

The guy on the cover does not match up to what the author wrote. See, Evan (aka Evil) has a beard, which was mentioned quite often in the book, and a huge tattoo of a spider on his chest, which was mentioned a few times because of Lucy’s extreme phobia of spiders. So I wasn’t exactly thrilled about the cover and if I had to suggest one thing to the author….change it. Get some awesome tatted hunk to pose for the cover and then put a huge spider tattoo on his chest. Seriously, just do it!!

Now onto the blurb. While some of it stays true to what the story is about but the bit about Lucy’s brother isn’t exactly true. He is suspected of murdering two people, not off on a technicality. Actually, he hadn’t been in jail for 5 years and lived out in CA before coming to NY to escape a psycho ex girlfriend (or so he says). The suspicion of murder comes after he moves to NY. There is one person in the book who did get off on a technicality. They must have mixed them up.

I actually liked Evil, a lot. While I don’t agree with vigilante’s, I can definitely see where he, Warden, Sentential, Ryder and the Judge are coming from. Evil is a retired homicide detective, Warden a retired prison guard, Sentential a retired Special Forces and Ryder retired CIA operative. They all have seen the worst of humanity and they all have seen obviously guilty people walk when they should have stayed in jail. Unfortunately, our justice system is flawed and it happens all the time.

Lucy, I was a little more on the face about. While she rocked at being a public defender, she sucked at her personal life (seriously). She supported her brother and made excuses for him. “He got picked up for everything because people automatically assumed he did it because our father went to jail” was the main excuse that she used and it made me want to smack her. Listen, I knew exactly where she was coming from. Having someone who you can’t trust or who is draining you dry of all your money is awful and that’s all I am going to say.

The slow burn, at first, between her and Evil was delicious. Instead of instantly falling into InstaLove/InstaLust, the author made them have a 2 year history of wanting each other. And when they finally do give in (she went down on Evil in his bar), it is explosive and oh so good!!

I was a little put off, though, by the amount of violence in the book. Also, I felt that while it was patterned after MC books, it wasn’t a full MC book. Basically, it was just 4 friends who are sick of the justice system and take matters into their own hands that happen to ride motorcycles. Also, there was a couple of loose ends. The slimy lawyer…what happened to him after the SOB’s visited him? And the storyline with the Pyros….it just disappeared after Lucy’s car got torched and the SOB’s took revenge.

The sub story involving her brother was sad and the ending to that was awful. I felt bad for Evil to be put in that situation and for Lucy to have to be in it (want to know what happened? Read the book!)

The ending was not what I expected and I cried.
