Rating this smack dab in the middle - the premise was excellent, the parallel to war was on point, and some of the characters absolutely gripped me.... But it felt more like an unpolished draft than other dystopian books I've read and loved, plus the racism, misogyny, and homophobia are off the charts in ways that don't feel entirely attributable to the characters themselves. I liked the ending, but there's a lot left to be desired in the execution. Probably not surprising for his first novel. I did like it more than other books of his I've read, in large part because it doesn't have women characters who are significant enough to be as thoroughly mistreated as in some of the others.

Felt like a short story, which I mean as a compliment. So much of the world is hinted at while keeping the focus squarely on the protagonists. Left me wanting to read more stories set in this same world.

This book takes a very simple premise, what if 100 boys had to walk to the death, and brings you on a rollercoaster ride.

My only gripe is the use of the Nword. It felt gratuitous.

I would also would have liked more context about the world and what happens after the race, but I respect King’s choice to show only what he did.

The Long Walk is an incredibly dark and disturbing story about an annual competition in which 100 young men walk across New England in a dystopian United States. The physical and mental  breakdown of the participants over a 5 day period slowly reveals the consequences of resistance and the circumstances that drive entry into the Long Walk. The reader is immersed in the walk itself,  with minimal exploration of the history of how it was established. It is true horror without supernatural elements.
*Note: The Long Walk was written in 1979, so there are some dated references and language.

The digital edition included an additional unrelated story about a man accused of a murder he didn't commit. I found this an enjoyable bonus after such a heavy read.

The concept is really interesting, but I wish there had more of a focus on why the boys were in the Walk. It felt a bit lazy for most of the boys to just be like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
