I read this because it was the "Spokane is Reading" pick for this year.  This was a book I probably would never have read since I hadn't heard of it previously. I usually enjoy their yearly picks and this book was no exception.  This historical drama was very dark and dealt with difficult themes, at times it was hard to continue reading but I really wanted to see how things turned out for the characters. I am glad I finished the book.

Debra Magpie Earling's short story in MONTANA NOIR is one of my favorites of the collection, so I don't know why it took me so long to read more from her. I'm so glad I finally did. This is certainly a grim story at times, but a good one.
