Set on the Flathead Indian Reservation in the 1940s, Louise White Elk is a young, free-spirited woman trying to find her way in a community filled with racism and poverty and harmful expectations for her life & body.

What a visceral reading experience 😳. I agree with Sasha’s (@anishinaabekwereads) correlation to Erdrich’s way of pulling you into a story with the prose. I was fully in from the beginning. The tension and uncertainty made it read as a thriller does.

However, this is not an easy read. With an abundance of content warnings, it’s a book that has become known for portraying the rampant violence against Indigenous women.

Again with Sasha, I feel ways about the very end [aka I did not like it]. But I’m ever grateful that Milkweed published this reissued edition and the overarching story is one that has burrowed its way into my heart [i’m going to pretend the last page doesn’t exist]
