This book is free of characters actually wanting to kill themselves but it's not free of 'I'm gonna kms at a minor inconvenience' jokes.142whoopingllamas's review against another edition

While the content can be dark, it is narrated from the POV of the personal assistant who is ever optimistic and the embodiment of sunshine and rainbows— so it’s all filtered through her eyes.daenesea's review against another edition

This is such a cute book. The world building feels like a combination of fantasy and modern (there's
While the overall story is quite light-hearted and even silly, there are a few heavier plot points
The book does set itself up to be a series at the end by leaving a bit of a cliffhanger and plenty of loose ends. From my understanding, there will be two more books and I will definitely be picking them up when they're released.

I reread this book for a refresh to prepare for the recently released Apprentice to the Villain, and while I do still find the overall story quite charming, this time around I found myself a bit agitated with MC Evie's childishness.
I know it's for the plot, but sometimes the way Evie speaks to the Villain (the love interest/her BOSS!) leaves me dumbfounded. Don't use blatant innuendos with your boss, Evie!
However, I still found the rest of the cast absolutely endearing and enjoyed the book the 2nd time around regardless. Perhaps I'm simply feeling much more critical this time, but overall I would still recommend this to someone looking for something unserious and fun.

Evie Sage is struggling to provide for her ailing father and little sister when a chance encounter in the woods leads to new employment—as personal assistant to The Villain.
I’m not even sure I have good enough words to write a review for this one because truly I loved it so much. It started a tiny bit slow for me because it is unapologetically silly, but then it got deep and touching and badass and swoony and I was 10000% on board.
For whatever reason, I didn’t really expect much romance from this but let me tell you…this book provided a new beloved book boyfriend AND a stellar new couple to ship and ugh it just…it made me so giggly and happy to read?! Again, I don’t have good words but it gave me so many feels and made me so happy and I loved it so much.
Basically…go read this book???? The pretty sprayed edges are also a welcome bonus.
Recommended to anyone, but especially if you like: morally grey men; mysteries but make it a romantasy; unexpected depth
CW: Lots of violence/death/gore/injury; mentions of attempted sexual assault
Graphic: Confinement, Death, Gore, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Violence, Blood, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, and Injury/Injury detail
