Fun dialog over a threadbare story. 'shock' ending feels cheap today.

Poignant, dark, and funny in a way that McDonagh alone seems to capture. It’s simple and tragic and yet I cackled out loud more than a few times.

McDonagh is an expert at conveying the honest and raw realities of the human experience. He does so much with so little—providing layers within what seems like so little about nothing much at all.

Read for an Irish Literature class in college. This is the play that introduced me to my love of Martin McDonagh. It's harsh, brutal, touching, and realistic. All good things in contemporary theatre. Do not bypass this one on your way to reading "Behanding in Spokane" or "Lieutenant of Inishmore".

Expected darkly comedic instead got dark. But it’s mcdonagh so it’s dark in the best way possible.

Absolutely loved it! I’m a huge fan of Martin McDonagh’s filmography, and so when I learned he started out as a playwright, I knew I wanted to try and read some of his plays. Considering the fact that this is supposed to be performed and not necessarily read, it’s incredible how engaging the story is. The plot isn’t too insane, but the characters and dialogue more than make up for it. Martin McDonagh is truly a gifted storyteller and I can’t wait to read more of his plays!
