This was my best read of the year. Maybe of the decade. This book reads like an epic. A sprawling cast and storyline leading up to a great battle, both literally and metaphorically. I love an author who knots the storyline up so much I can’t imagine how they’ll get themselves out of it. And then they do it. Hill also has the begrudgingly amazing quality of a writer who I’d probably challenge in a philosophical or political debate. And yet their storylines are so compelling I can’t deny their talent. All I can say is holy shit. What a good book.

Wow! What a trip! Where do I even begin?
First of all, I'd like to say that Faye Andresen is one of the best characters I've ever read!

Absolutely loved her and all her flaws!
The comedy of the book is spot on and it kinda reminds me of this almost satire-like style from American Psycho and American Beauty.

Then only reason this book isn't a 5 star for me is that sometimes the long descriptions were tiredsome, even tho much enjoyable, and right about the middle of the book.....
:
****TRIGGER WARNING AND SPOILER ALERT*****
:
Spoilerthere's a scene containing a quite explicit rape description of a minor and it really threw me off guard. In a book that is intended to be a comedy, even if it's a raw satire kind of comedy, having such descriptions were uncessessary, in my opinion. They did not add anything I already didn't know to the character which this happened to... so there was that...

Nevertheless,
This book has amazing, powerful, (and most important in my opinion,) FLAWED feminine characters and also awesome disaster male characters! Loved it!
Many parts of the book got me laughing out loud and I don't think I've had such an enjoyable read in a long time! Like, this book is over 600 pages but it didn't feel like a burden to read! I fell in love with most of the characters and wanted to dig deep into their personal, chaotic lives!

Special s/o to Bishop! What a man! What a character!

I found myself really invested in this book, in fact the day I finished I read over 200 pages in one sitting (something I do rather often but not necessarily for books of this size). That being said, this book was almost unnecessarily long and I often felt myself wishing that Nathan Hill had cut some details or sections out. That being said, many of the sections were really really important to the end so I understand why he wrote them. However, it took me so long to read this book and many times I was ready to take a break and finish a different book because it was taking me so long, in a way that made me frustrated considering I picked it up every day and thoroughly enjoyed the 80 or so pages I read every time.

Nathan Hill writes with meticulous, almost extreme detail, a feature of his writing style that is mostly engaging and addictive but sometimes becomes a slog to read through. This book easily could have been one or two hundred pages shorter. However, the majority of the reading experience was a good one.

Difficult topics are covered with both care and brutal honesty. Every nook and cranny of each character's pathetic, awful life is exposed, and I found myself not really liking them very much, but relating to them heavily.

The way the multigenerational narrative is told is effective. Hill portrays the cycle of trauma very well.

The Nix is sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, and always spot-on with its observations about human nature.
