I'm a sucker for reverse harems, and this one included zombies! It's been a long time since I've read anything dealing with zombies, and I couldn't wait to get into this one. This book focuses mainly on Kelsey as she is just trying to survive. She's been without human contact for over 400 days by the time she meets these four random guys at her fence trying to find shelter after running away from a herd of zombies! I was obsessed with the zombie angle and couldn't get enough of it. I even loved seeing this harem come together. But things went downhill/got a little boring after the harem was together because we lost focus on the apocalypse. Until now, we had zombie content and isolation, and Kelsey was seriously struggling. We got glimpses of that when the guys appeared, but then it was like they were in this life of bliss since the zombies couldn't get over the fence. They lived this new life where they maintained everything, and overall, they didn't need to deal with the zombies, so they were more of an aftermath then. We never learn what started the zombie apocalypse or if it was ever cured. But we see a glimpse of a happily ever after when the book ends. Anyways it's a fun light read that was pretty fast and took on a different atmosphere from the other books I've been reading. However, it does deal with some pretty heavy content, such as suicidal thoughts, suicide, a pandemic, post-traumatic stress disorder, and isolation.

„I snuggle deeper under the comforter, trying to find the will to get up and face another day but sometimes the emptiness of my existence makes me want to just not bother. Waking up to this emptiness, this desire to just quit, is becoming more and more frequent as the days go by. As I stare up at the ceiling, I wonder if today is the day that I'll finally find the courage to end it all.“

Already the very first few sentences of the book made me anticipate a fairly deep and emotional book despite its shortness. Considering this and the rest of the book there also should be TW for depression beside the suicidal thoughts. I liked how the trauma was pictured and processed.

I love how thoughtful and caring the boys are with Kelsey. The accept her struggles and try to help her ease them (more or less successful at times).
“There are no hard edges to her but there are cracks. Cracks we all want to fill with tending and care to make her whole again.“

That last chapter was absolutely unexpected I mean there was no introduction telling the readers that this is the epilogue nor was there a time jump mentioned when there obviously happened one. Confused me slightly at first but all in all it’s a cute ending.

In my opinion the book actually has potential to be longer like about a hundred more pages showing the settled life of the five and maybe feature some more serious problems from outside the fence.
This was my first zombie/ apocalypse book I’ve read and considering this I find it to be surprisingly pretty great.
