This volume was great. I loved that 3/4 of the volume focused on one specific event (the Garden Party) so it didn't feel super rushed and was great for seeing more interaction between so many different elements: the four consorts, the various ladies-in-waiting, the emperor and his officials, etc. I also love that we're slowly starting to get into some of the darker subjects

(like why Maomao has her freckles and the realities that Consort Lishu and the Empress Dowager had to face as child brides essentially)

. Looking forward to the next volume!

I am so glad I happened upon this manga. There is so much to unpack in every volume: history, political intrigue, potions, mystery. I’m 100% invested in this story and cannot wait to see where Maomao leads the story next.

The Apothecary Diaries Volume 2 continues Maomao's experience as a food taster in the inner palace. This volume sees growth in Maomao's relationship with the other ladies in waiting as she also begins to understand more about the court and its structure. We get further information on her backstory, specifically about her freckles. This manga does a great job of weaving the mysteries of the palace with Maomao's daily life. I am interested to see if we will get a larger overarching story across volumes or if this will be more centered on small moments that develop Maomao's character and her relationships.
