I think this was my first read by Kendare Blake. Needless to say, it won't be my last. :)

Although it was definitely dark, The Dogs of Athens was enjoyable. It was interesting to see how Blake turned the story around - from Artemis thinking about how lives of mortal must suck (aren't my skills with verbiage and summary amazing? haha), because of the limited time they have on earth, to realizing that the life of a goddess can have moments of mortality.

I know I'm missing out on some backstory since, as aforementioned, I haven't read other books (yet) by Kendare Blake. But this short story/novelette definitely makes me want to pick up something by Blake, sooner rather than later.

dark fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

This was another fun little glimpse into the gods, this time into Athena before she started getting sick. She finds herself living in Miami where she catches the eye of a young runaway who is convinced she's a vampire. While Athena plays along of a bit, the charade soon turns deadly and Athena realizes that alone is how she will always be. A short story but it definitely took and a sad and brutal turn at the end. But it was a nice glimpse into how Athena was before the current war started.

)Spoiler for the second book)
SpoilerThis story makes Artemis' death in the books so much sadder now that you know it was her own dogs that killed her.

Interesting update of Greek mythology

They feel more like the real myths. Immortal but more contradictory, temperamental, and human at the same time. I like this author's take on updated mythology over Rick Riordan's series.

This book really confused me because when I got it from the library, I didn't see anything attaching it to another series, but after finishing it I looked it up to find that it was a mini part of the series. Being only 19 pages long, there was barely any content and it didn't have a good plot or ending. The reviews it got seemed mostly positive, though, so I decided that I couldn't give it a fair rating unless I read the rest of the series. For now, I would only give it around a 2, but I think I'll probably change my mind after getting the context.

Quite dark for ya (as is expected for the Goddess War books) and it clears out what was Artemis' true death.

This novella gives us a glimpse at Artemis & her loyal dog pack as they wonder Athens. She is trying to find some of the older gods & goddesses that she used to know. However, she starts to see that her loyal companions are changing.

Where will this all lead?

This piqued my interest. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. The description of Athens is pretty accurate and most importantly from a locals point of view it was vivid as it could be.
