I read this book a long time ago, and I HATED it. In any discussion of King’s work, which I largely enjoy, I would talk about how much I hated it. When I started a chronological re-read of his writing, I had initially decided to skip this. However, I ultimately decided it had been so long, I’d grown older, etc., and I gave it a shot. I no longer hate it, but it has a lot of issues and I would definitely rank it at/near the bottom. There’s definitely a good core story in there, but it’s too bloated with extraneous and dumb stuff to really stick with me.

There are some really memorable characters in this novel . Anne Anderson is in the book so briefly, but the writing is so wonderful you really get to develop strong feelings for her character right away. Peter, a dog, written so lovingly you’ll want up pet him. And Gard’s addiction is written so honestly is haunting. The book did have a lot of seemingly unneeded chapters, but overall the characters were well written and well developed.
