This was okay, I liked some of the characters and the time period of Victorian London is always a favorite, however, the main character was so cranky and rude that it got old after the first couple of chapters. I know that was supposed to be his schtick, but when essentially every line he speaks to his ward is demeaning, it just wore on me. There were also so many characters deaths to keep track of and the culprit seemed a little obvious. I did like the storyline with the Inspector and March and was intrigued by the little cliffhanger at the end, but I don't think it would be enough to read the next book. Also, the guy that killed the cats was just too much yuck for me.

M.R.C Kasasian really knows how to pull a surprise and twisted ending!

This was OK but not very interesting. Unfair to give it a bad rating as such because I think this was more a burn out of mysteries for me so I may revisit after a bit.

Sidney's interactions with everyone he meets (but especially his maid) are uniformly hilarious in that he is always the worst and the people are always baffled by his... lets call them eccentricities, to be charitable. But my laugher died a quick death when we got to the end and I had to read several chapters consisting of body horror
Spoilera character is being slowly eaten alive by maggots, when there is no cure and he is constantly picking them out of his skin
and even just writing that makes me want to die to BEWARE READER!

I will have to revise my mark for The Mangle Street Murders because of this book. Because it's better, but not better, simultaneously.

The story is mostly interesting, and keeps you suspecting until near the end. There is some character growth, not a lot, but some. And the deaths are good and gruesome.

There are however probably two or three too many deaths - the names get a bit jumbled. I wasn't a fan of the villain reveal, or motives. The twist at the end did a lot of heavy lifting to make the next book interesting.

In terms of development. Sidney Grice is basically the same pompous arse as in the first book, perhaps with slightly softened edges. March Middleton is less naïve, but still quite bold -- I do wish however that the author would cease reminding us that she's not a looker, and expand her backstory beyond pinning over the things we had revealed in the first book.
