This book was so interesting and nuanced. It is absolutely not a romance though (don't think it was intended to be). It puts a really interesting perspective on old dynamics among the upper class, a new variation on mystery, and the way it is narrated makes it even more interesting.

Book can essentially be split into thirds with their own central plot: 1. P3dophilia, 2. Mystery, and 3. Political/judiciary discourse
It’s giving Walmart Jane Eyre

Rebecca has been on my list forever and I'm so glad I finally read it! The only detail I knew going into it was that it was about a marriage in which the husband's late wife's name was Rebecca. I now understand why this book is so often recommended as a quintessential gothic tale. What a RIDE. At times I felt bleak, others angry, and often I cringed at what the narrator went through.

This book sticks with you after read it.  You reflect on the revelations unfolded and question your own character.  I loved this book.  Written in 1920s the emotions still hold true in 2024.

I was disappointed with this book. I have heard so many wonderful things about this classic, gothic novel. However, it was not nearly as suspensful as I hoped it would be.

My biggest qualm with the novel was that the "romance" between Mr. and Mrs. de Winter was entirely unhealthy, manipulative, and nothing to be desired. I cannot stand to read a novel where the main female is constantly afraid of angering her partner, both of them pretending to be "ok" around others, and her desparately trying to making their relationship work while he keeps telling her that she should work harder at it all. That kind of story hits a bit too close to my personal trigger warnings.

However, it could be said that Daphne du Maurier hit the nail on the head creating that kind of unhealthy romance, and that she was commenting on society.
