Captain Jack's Woman by Stephanie Laurens

I like the lady pirate plot, the action part of the story is great and it's about half the book. The ending is a bummer, the original Cynster series has the FL and ML pretty equally conquering each other emotionally but this just said a few lines promising that was true in this book to without really showing it. I'm okay that he's sexist because of the historical context, and I feel rewriting the past to pretend it's fair for women just hurts women's rights in the present. Honestly I think the plot is more erotica for beginners than romance though, not because of spicy levels just because the emotion only part of chemistry isn't built up enough.

I loved the silly smuggling crew appoint some random woman who helped them once as their leader thing. Very RPG.

Unfortunately, it's insta-lust and shows signs of the independent woman suddenly deciding that she's all for sex and marriage.

The MMC also has some creepy crisis because he doesn't even know she's a woman at first and is thinking about how he lusts over a 16 year old boy.

From reading reviews, it sounds like it gets worse. I don't do mindless sex obsessed FMCs.

Update: I changed from one star to two, but I don’t disagree with anything I said below. Jack is an asshole, that’s not how virginity works, and he took away her damn horse. Lauren’s writes tyrants always, but I think he is the worst.

Original Review: Captain Jack is an asshole. The idea that arousal = love is disturbing. The hymen was...bizarrely portrayed. I could go on, but you get the picture. Stephanie Laurens, what the hell happened with this one?

Just needed an audiobook to listen to while I was crocheting and found this on the audible plus catalogue. It wasn’t something I would normally go for but it was an easy listen and a classic historical romance. It was a bit long, and not very plot heavy but once I had started I wanted to finish it. Very mid.
