The stories were hit of miss for me. I borrowed it from the library so I had a time limit and that definitely effected my reading. I think it would be more enjoyable if I had read each story In the way someone might read fanfiction.
Ideas were interesting I just wasn't able to get into it

The short stories in the collection were very hit or miss for me, but almost all of them described interesting solarpunk worlds/futures so I feel that goal was met. Looking forward to reading the next anthology in the series.

This short story collection was a bit of a mixed bag for me. What I enjoyed about the collection as a whole is that it gave me exactly what I wanted: multiple visions of futures in which humanity has learned (or is still learning) to use renewable energy instead of fossil fuels, to care for nature, to use sustainable materials and to reduce waste. Many of the stories also imagined different ways to structure societies and to be in community with other people, which is something I'm excited to see. Sadly, some of the stories just didn't work for me, for a variety of reasons. But, since all of them where quite short, it wasn't much of a struggle to get through them if I didn't vibe with them. And in the end, I enjoyed enough of them to make the collection worth my while.
My favorite (though it is hard to choose!) was probably "Midsummer Night's Heist" which is cowritten by two real-world collectives, Commando Jugendstil and Tales from the EV Studio. It is set in a Milano that feels quite close to our world, and features a form of political protest that has an immediate positive impact while also making a political statement. And on top of that, I just had fun reading it!
All in all, this was a fun way to read a few solar punk stories, and to get to know some authors I might want to read more of.

Review originally published here

I was very lucky to be offered an ARC of this straight from the editor due to the fact I previously reviewed Sunvault, another solarpunk collection of short stories. I leapt at the chance and read it straight away as I adore solarpunk and am always happy to read more of it.

Again, as this is a short story collection it’s hard to review because all the stories were so different. It was delightful to see all the different locations and interpretations used in the story. As seen in the blurb, the stories are set all across the globe, and some even venture into space. One particular story, The Spider and the Stars focuses on introducing insects to space and I really enjoyed that one despite hating spiders. Then again, I could just list the names of all the short stories as I enjoyed them all.

I particularly enjoyed the introduction which actually goes and lists other solarpunk books and short story collections for further reading which is so helpful as often when I mention that I enjoy solarpunk, I’ll get asked for recommendations. There isn’t a table of contents at the start which doesn’t bother me on my Kindle as I can easily skip through the stories, but in a physical edition that would disappoint me as I definitely see myself wanting to re-read certain stories again.

Overall though, this was a fantastic collection and it’s always brilliant to see more solarpunk collections out there. If you enjoy solarpunk or are interested in exploring it as a genre then this is an excellent place to start! I highly recommend this and hope more collections will be published in the future!
