It was by chance that I chose this book to read at beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. For a fiction, it kept me on my seat with the two stories running.

I love a good historical book and love the Romanov story. This is an interesting retelling, but it was hard to read.

Masello's The Medusa Amulet is the better, more satisfying adventure but I still enjoyed this one. Things actually slowed down in the last quarter of the book, once the chaos began at the island camp. I became impatient for the story to end. Not all subplots were fully resolved. The supernatural elements were largely behind the scenes, which was a bit of a disappointment after Medusa. Other reviewers say there are technical flaws with the story (i.e. geography, culture) but I didn't know any better. Masello really has fun writing within his "formula" for his stories, and it works. I'll be reading yet another.
