This is a beautifully written story based on the real life Stefania Podgorska and how she hid 13 Jews during WWII. Stefania was everything a lead character should be and this historical novel was equal parts entertaining and tragic. I cheered. I cried. I felt deeply moved by every page.

Danger, romance, laughter, and heartbreak abound. More than anything, the hope and sense of triumph over the evils of humanity are so impactful. One life saved thirteen others in a time that couldn’t have been more terrifying.

What a treasure, I’d recommend this novel to everyone.

Honestly inspiring

This book has left me in awe. Going into this book I hadn't understood it was a true story. I think learning about it after made my brain combust. The main character and her sister have more courage than I think I could muster. Reading about all of the heart wrenching experiences and how Stefi handed each of them is remarkable.

I don’t normally take so long to read something like this and the length of time it took me is no reflection on the quality of the story. I picked a bad time to start it with it being so close the presidential election. This book is definitely a heavy read with a lot of sadness and I felt so anxious reading it. Of course those are things we should feel when we read about the Holocaust. But given our current political climate here in the US I found myself having to put this down for a few days at a time.

It’s well written and well researched and I loved the Author’s Note that contained updates and photos of the people in the book. It was nice to put faces to some of their names and to know what became of them after the war ended.

A woman I follow on IG raved about this audiobook and I went into it cold, not realizing it was a novelization of a true story which I generally do not like and avoid. Although the true story is AMAZING, I did not find this book well written. I did appreciate having a Polish woman do the audiobook, but she didn't really distinguish characters well so I had to re-listen to some parts trying to keep people straight. I did really like the end where the author talked about how she learned about Stefania Podgorska and then it was followed by an interview by her of the reader which was also interesting. I plan on looking for the interviews she mentioned of Stefania, because this woman was an insanely brave teenager and I would like to hear her speak of this time in her life.

Set in Poland. Courageous teenager who cares for her young sister and gives shelter to 13 Jewish people during the German occupation. Based on a true story - bravery, survival, and defiance.

The Nightingale walked so this book could run. Let it be known that this is probably the best historical novel/biography I have ever read.

It really was that good. I admire this woman and her sister's bravery so much.

Not only that, the writing itself was incredible. It was so descriptive and lovely to read. The way the author conveyed emotions was touching. I really cannot get over this book.

It was an incredibly wonderful touching story about love, loss, humanity, and bravery. Seriously, give it a read. It was amazing.
