Queenie and Maddie are best friends, friends who likely would have never met had their paths not crossed during a tumultuous time, World War II. Maddie is a mechanic, she has a natural affinity for figuring out how things work, she also loves to fly. In a time where women were scarcely given a chance to use such skills, Maddie becomes a vital part of a secret mission. Queenie is fiercely intelligent and has a gift for acting, she can be any character at any time, including the enemy. As Code Name Verity unfolds we become immersed in a story of powerful friendship and heartbreaking decisions.

Code Name Verity is told through the writing of Maddie and Queenie. The opening section is from Queenie’s point of view as she recounts the events that led to her capture. When Maddie takes over as narrator in part 2, everything we thought to be true is quickly turned upside down as the story winds its way to a heartbreaking and triumphant conclusion. Elizabeth Wein manages to balance a compelling storyline with historical accuracy and memorable characters making this a highly enjoyable historical novel.

This is an intense and fascinating story of survival and friendship. Reading the notes of the captured girl, you are pulled in to her internal struggle to survive and to stay true to herself. She describes her life before and the torture she undergoes every day from the Gestapo. And when it all comes to a head, about halfway through the book, you will not be able to put it down.

Of course, with the description of torture and threat of rape mentioned, you def. want to give this to a reader who can handle such harsh realities of war.

This may be one of the best historical fiction novels I have read. Well researched and well written.

I had to suspend so much disbelief to make it through this book, it was unbelievable. I might do like my friend Sarah and stop reading about WWII again. Stupid WWII.

I loved this book. I didn’t see it coming. I had to call my best friend to discuss it.
