This is a lot of people's favorite book in the trilogy, and I can definitely see why. It drives the story forward in a way that a lot of people weren't expecting. I still remember reading this for the first time and being absolutely shocked; I read the entire book in one night. Having that cliffhanger ending was the worst at the time, because it's such a great ending, but you need to know what happens next. Very much like the Scythe trilogy from Neal Shusterman. They both definitely have you hooked.

my only complaint is I would’ve like the Games portion of the book to be a little longer, but I understand why they were cut short. the ending was a little abrupt, too, but that’s not really a big deal. other than that I definitely liked this slightly more than the first book, even if a majority of it was build up to the Games themselves.

 collins is able to raise the stakes and keep you invested in the characters and the plot and even in the new characters. the additions to the lore are fascinating and you want to know more. katniss’ grief and mental state is also interesting to explore but equally devastating.
