A few weeks ago I threw out a Scarlet Pimpernel comparison in connection with another book. That was because I hadn't met this book yet.
That's enough said, right?
Just kidding. I'll say more.
It's World War I and pretty much all Englishmen are getting involved. Except for Cyril Hammersley, a vapid and infuriating nitwit. He's engaged to Doris Mather, a much sought after American girl, and no one can figure out why she picked him when she could have had anyone. She's not too sure how it happened either. Anyway, the first chapter is a dinner party, and most everybody is like, "Cyril, you are such an idiot!" Stuff then happens.

Doris was a really nice heroine because she was appropriately feminine, but at the same time she knew how to actually do stuff, which you don't always see of a girl in an adventure book.
