I'm a fan of the Agatha Raisin series and was excited to get both the ebook and audio versions from NetGalley. I know, greedy, right? But while I do enjoy reading with my eyes, sometimes I don't have the time to do it and some books end up being better in one or the other format.
This one, however, wasn't all that great in either. I wanted to love it - because Agatha is a hoot - but I didn't. I couldn't get into any of the mystery aspects and Agatha seemed more cranky than funny. Maybe it's me. I hope it is. And there's a bit of a plot twist toward the end that seemed to be a bit much. I don't know... I'll give the next one a shot and see how I feel about the series at that point.
If you haven't ever read one of the AR books but enjoy the show, don't jump in with this one. Go back to the beginning and start there.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for hooking me up!

Green is doing well at capturing and expanding the voice of MC Beaton in this new installment of Agatha Raisin. Agatha is up to her old tricks - solving crimes, while being surrounded by mishaps. responding to interactions with her usual saucy manner. Convoluted story brings in a paternity suit, along with a decades old death, plus a couple of murders.

This is my first Agatha Raisin book. I hate to say it but I was underwhelmed. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the character but at times found her to be hard around the edges. The mystery seemed to be on the backburner where her personality was the star of the book.

Maybe not the best Agatha Raisin to start with. And was ok, was fine. But I was expecting something more… maybe it’s because this was written by two authors, one after the original author's death. I need to research more...
RTC (Keeping flipping between 2 and 3 star. I would round up, but I changed my mind on this one...)
I've always said that I would try an Agatha Raisin mystery. There's something intriguing about her that made me want to try. Plus, she doesn't sound like a typical detective you read in a "cosy village mystery" - she's not likeable, quick to temper, a little prickly and bitter, and yet someone people like. And yet, I start with this one, rather than an older case such as [b:Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death|8789394|Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death (Agatha Raisin, #1)|M.C. And yet, this is me we're talking about so, of course, I do things the wrong way round.
There's not much to say about this, if I can be honest. This was a nice, fun audiobook (Penelope Keith narrates the audiobook and there's something wonderful about her take on the story), and yet... and yet, the characters felt a tad softer than I was expecting. I saw flashes of Agatha being quite prickly and blunt, but she seems much softer. Not sure if it's because the characters are getting older from when we first met them in book 1 or if because MC Beaton died and a new author (R.W. Green) taking over writing (he's done it with a previous Agatha Raisin, [b:Agatha Raisin: Hot to Trot|50545997|Agatha Raisin Hot to Trot|M.C. Probably not the best place to start but am intrigued to try one more of her earlier cases... We shall see...
