A well written book but sad and hopeless for much of it.
This historical fiction about the dust bowl and the great depression sees a woman's unfortunate choices during that time.
Elsa marries a farmer who wishes for a bigger life. Life is still fairly good while the crops are good. When the drought hits, there are no good options. Most prefer to stay, where they at least have land and a home and the hope next year will be better. But events eventually force them to join the masses headed to California. California isn't as promised though.
The book covers the farmers, the migrants, and the strikers. The characters are well developed and it is also a book about a mother trying to do anything for her kids and the complexities of love in hard times.

Kristin Hannah did it once again. Really enjoyed this book and even shed a few tears at the end. It’s always terrifying how much today and the past parallel each other.

This is both historical fiction and yet very of the moment. Really brought the experience to life, but I’m gonna be honest... that ending...still processing to see if I hated it as much as I did as I experienced it.
