Like Fall of Hyperion, there is a lot of plot development in the beginning, which gives time for Simmons to explore the characters and universe, but at times it drags. I would not appreciate the ending of any of his books as much without that structure, as, like Fall of Hyperion, ends in a very satisfying way. I love Aenea so far. I am so excited to start next book tonight. But I am annoyed I don’t have a physical copy to inspect the cover for clues. I did notice that the cover for this book does not have any actual place in the story, as Fall of Hyperion’s does (and as Hyperion’s most likely does).

I love the love in this book, how this becomes a book about the physics of love. Because I am a sucker. And when there is good sci fi and even a hint of good romance…it’s an all timer. There are so many great characters in Simmons’s books and I want to meet more.

This book felt like bonus content if you enjoyed the first two books in the Cantos. I found it less inspired than its predecessors.

This read like a new author had taken over for Simmons after the first two books in the Hyperion Cantos. Instead of a blend of horror, Twilight Zone, and mysticism this was much more of a traditional sci-fi adventure. The prose was more accessible and the story interesting, but it wasn’t as gripping as the first two in the series. I still quite enjoyed it and will be immediately moving on to the next book in the Cantos.
