An inspiring story of love, life and independence. A real look into Puerto Rican families, traditions and the American life. Santiago is a true story teller who draws vivid images with her poetry.

Although a bit preachy and reminiscent of an application-type "personal statement" at times, this book is still an inspirational read.

This resonated with me in the best possible way. I see myself through this journey as I'm reading, I felt a roller coaster of emotions; anger, sadness, hope, and love. I will always remember the lessons in this book, to stay true to yourself and that no matter what you are loved and valued. Thank you Esmeralda

I found this one harder to get through than the others due to the emotional abuse, manipulation, and gaslighting by the title character. But it did eventually get to Santiago finding (or starting to find) herself which was good.
