conceptually really interesting but falls a little flat as there is no real reflection on the observations made about grief, wealth, vanity and mental illness, but still a relatively enjoyable read! 📖

This book turned a totally depressing story into something outrageously hilarious. The dark humour mixes the privilege and vanity of the characters with the dark and painful. The characters are all entertainingly awful, as well as being absurd and sad and human.

Very interesting concept and fleshed-out psyche of the narrator. I did think it was a good depiction of grief and trauma. The theme of friendship that was explored was also touching to me.

However I felt that the right ideas and sentences were just flooded with randomness. I found it way too wordy, too long and because of this it lost important meaning. I really struggled through it because it was so slow. I understand that that might be the point but it just made me want to put the book down and I have read more meaningful depictions of depression using way less words. Then in contrast the ending felt rushed, unnecessary and hard to believe in the context of the rest of the book.

Another thing that bothered me was how much I felt like this was almost a guide of sorts. Like "How to go about dealing with trauma and coming back reset" There's a fine line there and to me it just felt dangerous to put this book out and act like in the end it just worked out for the main character.
But really a young woman that takes all kinds of pills with alcohol, blacks out for days on end, and puts her life in the hands of a strange man that wants to use her for art while she's passed out, is much more likely to not end up okay. While there is always special cases this wasn't openly reflected enough and that bothers and worries me.

this book is absurb. about my favourite thing (mentally ill women taking drugs) and feels a lot like a car crash (absolutely horrible but god you cannot look away)

While this wasn’t a masterpiece of a book, it was still very nice to read (even though a bit boring sometimes). The ending made it all worth it, even though you can guess it very easily in the first pages of the book.
I appreciated the narrator’s evolution, from her initial unreliability and selfishness to her acceptance of her parent’s death allowing her to improve as a person, only to have to deal with yet another grief at the end of the book.
I also appreciated the writing style. It kept the « boring » parts nice to read.
It was pretty relaxing and nice to, for once, read a book where essentially nothing happens diegetically. This book reminds us that the story isn’t the only element that makes a book good in the sense that you do not need a complex plotline and such things to make your readers feel intense emotions, convey a message etc.
