I've not read an academic monograph with such verve as Stoever's. Her writing is lucid, accessible, and gripping. Though sound studies has long been a secondary academic interest of mine, I've never read widely enough in the field to feel as though I've begun to develop an understanding of what's at stake. As such, TSCL was a bit of a baptism by fire in terms of scaffolding my understanding of a field I know basically nothing about. That said, I learned a lot (to say the most banal thing about the text) and it prompted me to return to a few texts I haven't understood as well in context--Souls being one of these texts in particular.
